Weekend craft project: Star Wars Crochet – Yoda

Star Wars Crochet. I saw this on Amazon whilst looking for crochet books and wanted to try it immediately! This first box has been out for a year or two and features some of the classic Star Wars characters on the box like Yoda, Chewbacca and Jabba the Hut.

To be honest, I didn’t really look that closely at the box online. But when I got it, I realised that it only gives you enough yarn to make Yoda and a Stormtrooper – it does say this on the box, but like I say, I wasn’t really paying attention. I was wondering why it was so cheap and I guess that’s why…

The box is massive for what’s actually inside – the book itself is tiny! This is what you get:

  • Instruction book
  • Green, beige, dark brown, black and white yarn
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Some eyes and a needle
  • Stuffing

I decided to make the Yoda straightaway because it is so cute! You can see my progress below:

I think the instructions are pretty good and comprehensive, there’s about 10 pages explaining the basic stitches and pictures to guide you so you could pick this up as a complete beginner. However, you should probably try to familiarise yourself with the crochet abbreviations because the actual patterns could be confusing if you aren’t familiar with the abbreviations or with counting stitches (which I still have a problem with!)

I’m not sure if I went wrong somewhere (probably) but my Yoda head and body definitely came up bigger and taller than the picture in the book. Or maybe I made him too fat when I stuffed him…

This meant that when I made the cloak, it seemed to come up very small… A bit like when I’m trying on clothes that clearly don’t fit me anymore… And then I ran out of the beige yarn! Luckily I had some of my own light beige yarn so I did an extra row of chain stitches all around the cloak so that it would be a bit longer. It still doesn’t quite meet in the middle but I think it looks ok.

I think my favourite part was doing the feet! This was called a treble popcorn stitch and was a new stitch for me – you have to sew in claws – cute!

I’m not fussed about making the Stormtrooper so the next one on the list for me is Princess Leia. But I have to get some peach yarn for her face and more dark brown for her buns. Will update on my progress!
